When a partial hold makes sense
A partial hold is strongest when the questionable subset has a clean boundary.

- only one variant has a fit issue or revision mismatch
- the count problem appears tied to one package group rather than the whole order
- a cosmetic problem affects one visible subset while back-of-house parts still match the agreement
If you can point to the exact units being stopped without debate, a partial hold can save time and keep unaffected parts moving.
When you should stop the whole shipment instead
Do not pretend a subset is isolated if the evidence does not support that. Hold the entire shipment if:
- the revision or material question could affect every unit
- cartons or labels are mixed enough that you cannot trust which subset is which
- the same fit issue may be batch-wide even if you first noticed it on one sample
- the receiving team cannot stop stock, kitting, or assembly from mixing the units
- nobody owns the release decision for the allegedly good remainder
If traceability is weak, a partial hold creates false confidence. That is exactly when the safer move is a full receiving hold.

What has to be true before the rest of the shipment keeps moving

- the released subset can be described by SKU, box, count, or lot in plain language
- photos or notes show what was held and why
- the decision owner agrees that the unaffected portion really is unaffected
- stock, kitting, and assembly teams know exactly what is cleared and what is not
If any of those are missing, slowing down for a full hold is usually cheaper than cleaning up a bad release later.

- state whether the hold is for fit, revision, quantity, cosmetic review, or transit damage
- name the person or team that can clear the hold
